In the dry season much of the water turns to mist before reaching the bottom. The falls are named after Jimmie Angel, a pilot who crash-landed on top of the plateau in 1937.
How to estimate it
This is a measured record, so the best you can do is bracket it. Niagara drops about 50 m. The water of Angel Falls spills off a tepui, one of the flat table mountains whose cliffs rise around 1 km above the jungle. It must also beat the tallest skyscraper, 828 m, to feel so extreme. A guess of 900 m is fair. The surveyed height is about 980 metres.
