Measured from the centre of the Earth rather than from sea level, the farthest peak is Chimborazo in Ecuador, thanks to the planet's equatorial bulge.
How to estimate it
This is a surveyed fact, not something to derive, but you can bracket it. Mont Blanc, the roof of the Alps, reaches 4,800 m. Airliners cruise at 10,000 to 12,000 m and pass clearly above every mountain. Climbers speak of a death zone beginning at 8,000 m, which a handful of peaks enter. A guess near 9,000 m is sensible. The official height is 8,849 metres.
